ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Y-City Barbershop Chorus took it back to the 1950s Sunday afternoon at Secrest Auditorium.

They put on their show in front of a large crowd of about 600. Director Karen Boyer said this show was themed after the TV sitcom ‘Happy Days.’

“We’re starting with the 50s segment. We’re at Arnold’s Diner, if you remember from Happy Days. Then we move into a dance segment for the second part of our set featuring different dances like New York, New York and Tennessee Waltz,” said Boyer.

There were 33 singers on stage for the 50s themed show. Boyer said one of her favorite parts is the time period costumes and sets. She also said that a cappella music is making resurgence.

“We sing a cappella music and we do not sing with music. So they do not have the music on stage. These guys have memorized all of these songs for these two segments. It’s a lot of music to remember. Singing a cappella is back now, especially with the younger generation. And getting to sing doo-wop is really big right now,” said Boyer.

Boyer said they will now prepare for their Christmas chorus. Anyone interested in joining can attend their next meeting on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church.
