ZANESVILLE, Ohio- In the time of year for giving thanks, not all families have as much to be thankful for. One Zanesville man shared his story about how him and his family went from having nothing, to having enough to give back.

Kuwan Mayle went from living in the homeless shelter at the Salvation Army to working at it years later.

“And that point, it was the lowest point of my moms life. I was only 13 [and there] were 3 other siblings,” Mayle said. “They helped us get a house, they helped my mom get a job, they kept me out of trouble.”

Mayle then went on to graduate High School with honors, joined the U.S. Army and served his country for over 5 years.

“If it wasn’t for this place, wasn’t for the United Way, who knows where we would be,” said Mayle.

The Salvation Army partnered with the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties, team up to help those in need in the community.

Katie McNeil, Director of Resource Development with the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties, said they focus on obtaining goals in the community on health, education and income.

“These stories are happening everyday here in our community, and it’s just exciting to share one example of how our investment in our community has made such an impact,” said McNeil.

Mayle said because of community donations he was able to grow up through the Salvation Army and get to where he is today.

“You never know who you’re going to help,” said Mayle. “You’re giving someone a safe haven, and allowing this to be their safe haven is the biggest thing because they have nowhere else.”
