Zanesville Public Service Deputy talks road clearing

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Icy roads made the commute Wednesday morning a slippery mess, but as the day went on the roads drastically improved.
City salt and plow crews were busy working to keep the roads safe with some crews working before most people started their days. Deputy Director of Public Service Scott Bryant said crews got an early start pre-treating the roads.
“Our division superintendent, he was closely monitoring the storm as it came in. He did some pre-planning. Brought a crew in at midnight. Did some pre-treatment of the roads in anticipation of the ice and the rain. Worked out well for them.”
Bryant said the the first crew in at midnight worked on the pre-treatment which was simply put down salt; while the next shift worked to break the ice and get it off the roads. He said crews used about 600 tons of salt for this storm and have plenty more for the next storm.
“They started the season with 2800 and used about 1100 so far this season, excuse me, 1700 so far this season. We’ve got about 1100 in stock and they’ve got an order of salt on its way.”
Bryant said the sun coming out later in the day, as well as increased traffic on the roads, also contributed to the improved conditions on the road.
