Zanesville Celebrates ‘Free Fishing Day’

A program that allows local families the opportunity to get outdoors to enjoy the spring weather, took place Saturday.
The state of Ohio hosted It’s 3rd annual ‘Free Fishing’ weekend, this weekend where locals are able to fish without a license. Park Ranger, Robert Cifranic said they have this event is to encourage kids to get outdoors and be physically active.
"They seem to enjoy themselves of course it’s also the idea of getting the parents to come with them too so they can kind of interact with the parents and interact with the other kids here. We have people from Ohio Department of Natural Resources that they can see different things like the animals that they bring possibly the highs from people that bring different animals. It’s just good to get them out into the fresh air, learn something they’ve never done before," said Cifranic.
Cifranic said putting together this event was a community effort and he is proud of the turn out.
"One of the goals for the U.S Army of Corp Engineers is that we always try to promote water safety. So that’s one of the things we have set up here also. But, the whole idea is for the parents and the kids to get more of an appreciation of the outdoors," said Cifranic.
The first 50 kids received a free fishing pole and bait.
