ZANESVILLE, OH – On Sunday October 18th and Sunday October 25th the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy students will be participating in a Driving Practical Class on Zane State College Campus.

Campus Safety and Security plans to block off Zane State College parking lots the Friday evening prior to the Sunday trainings.

“Next two weekends, it’s part of our Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Defensive Driving Course. So what that entails, it’s a course that not only does theoretical applications of defensive driving skills, but also practical applications. So our cadets will be out in the vehicles doing their defensive driving maneuvering throughout the parking lots,” Criminal Justice Program Director John Gibson said.

The parking lots are blocked off for the safety of others, as cadets will be operating vehicles at high rates of speed. This training is imperative for those completing the Ohio Peace Officer Training.

“That will prepare cadets in Ohio with the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certification. They cannot work as a peace officer anywhere in the state until they have completed this program. So it runs the gamete from legalities to defensive driving, to fire arms, heavy emphasis on defensive tactics and constitutional use of force. Constitutional basics and on and on and on.”

The Driving Practical Class consists of obstacle courses, high speed vehicle handling, mirror usage, and basic maneuverability.
