City crews are working to keep storm drains open

ZANESVILLE – The City’s Street Department can immediately respond to residents who may have flooding in their streets. There are tips that the community can keep in mind to prevent flooding in their home from snow melt as well.
“What we want to tell people is there’s little things like shovel snow away from your foundation and pay really special attention to windows and things like shovel snow away from your foundation and pay really special attention to windows and things that are at ground and sub-surface weather. Clear the draining around your house at the same time. People don’t realize sometimes (that) they’re drains are plugged. That can obviously back water up into that house. This is also a good time to check your house for leaks in your basement and those areas where water can get in,” Zanesville Mayor Don Mason said.
The Street Department is well equipped and works diligently to clear the roads each year during this time.
“In the winter, we try a combination of salts and cinders and such things to keep the street safe but then as soon as it melts, it’s important and that’s what we’re doing today to go out and try to sweep up and vacuum up all of the debris we’ve put down to give you traction because otherwise it just becomes a lot of cinders on the road which, again, get back into the sewers and drains,” Mason said.
Mayor Mason also urges people to take proper health and safety precaution when performing manual labor live shoveling snow.
