Ice Jams Causing River to Rise

Those along the Muskingum River area keeping a watchful eye on conditions as the water level is rising in some areas.

Muskingum County Emergency Management Director Jeff Jadwin said the ice jam behind the former AK Steel building is still intact and they are now afraid a second jam in the river north of Riverside Park is causing water to rise at Terrace Shores, Gilbert Station and West Shore Drive. While the water is flowing under these jams, Jadwin said it’s not moving enough to dislodge the ice.

Jadwin said you also can’t dynamite the jam, you can only wait.

“You got to be concerned with the other residents that are downstream not only in our county but Morgan County, Washington County,” explained Jadwin. “The amount of debris that is in there. Plus we’ve got to be concerned about the bridges that are downstream, the dam to get this sudden on sought of water would be very serious problems.”

Currently only those in the Riverside Airport Road area were asked to evacuate. While, evacuation isn’t mandatory, Jadwin said if you are staying you need to keep a watchful eye on river levels.

“Look out watch the water if you see your road or it gets too close to your house then it’s time to get out and take the things you may need for several days and stuff for your pets, stuff for you and do what you’ve got to do. “

A flood warning is in place until 10am Tuesday in Muskingum County. They will reevaluate that through the day. Jadwin said those that have water in their homes should report their names, address and how much water to the EMA Office at (740) 453-1655.
