East Muskingum School District Hoping to Pass Two Levies in November

The East Muskingum School District is hoping to have two levies passed on the upcoming ballot.
In November, residents will have the opportunity to vote on a 1.3 mill emergency operating levy for the East Muskingum school district. This levy will replace the expiring bond and maintenance levy and will generate a fixed dollar amount of $515,000 annually. There will also be a second item on the ballot, which is to renew the existing Emergency Operating Levy.
“One is a renewal that’s been passed since 1993. It’s renewed every five years. It’s for a fixed dollar value of $394,000 and some change. The second though, the ballot language says additional is actually replacing what’s two expiring issues. One was the bond that built our middle school, and one was the maintenance levy for the upkeep with that,” Vice President of the School Board, Renee Coll said.
If the ballot issues are passed, taxes to the school district will not increase. Taxpayers will continue to pay the exact amount of dollars that they are currently paying. The money generated from the levies will go towards operating costs for electricity, diesel fuel, salaries, and more.
“As physical representatives of the district, we’re asking for money that we feel will give East Muskingum an opportunity to carry on the things that we’re already doing. Maybe even have some room to enhance some programming that we currently have. It’s very important that we continue this to really maintain the level of academics, athletics, and arts that East Muskingum schools offer,” Board of Education Member Matt Abbott said.
