November Marks Carbon Monoxide Safety Month

ZANESVILLE, OH – As temperatures drop and heating systems kick into gear, Columbia Gas of Ohio wants to highlight the importance of carbon monoxide awareness.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, and non-corrosive gas that is produced by burning fuel such as gasoline, wood, natural gas, propane, or oil. The risk of CO poisoning increases during the winter months when heating systems are used more frequently.
“Don’t use a gas or a charcoal grill in your home or garage. Do not use your oven to heat your home. We find that too often people will turn on their oven and leave the oven door open to generate heat within their homes. That’s just not a safe way to do it,” Erica Chronaberry, Columbia Gas of Ohio Communication Manager said.
Symptoms of CO poisoning can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, and loss of consciousness. It is recommended to install carbon monoxide detectors in your home. These devices can detect CO and prevent fatal accidents.
“If you feel that you may have carbon monoxide in your home, we recommend you get out of your homes immediately, call 911, and do not reenter until dispatchers tell you it’s safe to reenter your home,” Chronaberry said.
