The Animal Shelter Society Highlights the Importance of Keeping Pets Warm

ZANESVILLE, OH – As winter sets in, the Animal Shelter Society wants to emphasize the importance of keeping furry friends safe and comfortable.
The society advises pet owners to diligently inspect and clean their pets’ paws after they have been outside. Removing snow and ice can prevent irritation and potential health issues.
“The biggest thing if you have in door pets is when you take them outside, if it’s 30 degrees, you want to watch them. You want to go out and make sure they’re using the bathroom and they’re coming back in. You got different hair types of dogs. You’ve got short haired, long haired, you’ve got the double coats. So, you really just need to kind of pay attention. If your dog is shivering, it’s probably cold so I wouldn’t leave them out there for long periods of times.” Animal Care Manager, Rebecca Hunt said.
The shelter is providing straw as an effective, insulating bedding material. Straw is recommended over blankets, which can retain moisture and freeze in cold temperatures.
“They can just come through the shelter Monday through Friday. Let us know that maybe they need some straw, they can’t find any, and we can give them some to line up those outdoor cat boxes if they want to do that.” Hunt said.
