ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Tax season is just around the corner and the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan counties is looking for tax volunteers.

The tax clinic helps people file their taxes without having to pay fees to get their return. For the program to be successful, United Way needs at least 26 volunteers, but currently has about 18 signed up.

Community Impact Coordinator Katie Grubbs says the volunteer work can be flexible to fit anyone’s schedule.

“When volunteers come in, they really get to pick their schedule. If they can only work one hour after work, they come in between four and five, and they work on one person’s tax and then they can leave. It’s really up to the volunteer when they’re able to volunteer,” Grubbs said.

The clinic is expected to be open at the John McIntire Library on Saturdays, Mondays and Tuesdays during tax season. The United Way has training sessions available for volunteers to do tax returns. Tax clinic coordinator Abby Dickson says there are volunteer positions for every volunteer.

“We have our intake volunteers, who are more like greeters and collect preliminary information. So, they’re not the ones actually doing the taxes,” Dickson said. “Then we have the preparers who are the ones doing the state and federal taxes.”

Volunteers can sign up by calling the United Way at (740)454-6872 and asking for either Katie Grubbs or Abby Dickson.
