Election Workers, Now Hiring

Board Of Elections

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – As Ohio’s Primary Election draws near local election officials are looking to hire polling location staff members.

Muskingum County Board of Elections Specialist Cheryl West explained how residents can earn money through getting trained and serving their community on election day. To be a poll worker you must be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote or 17 years old and a senior in high school.

“Well we’re just kind of putting out a message to let people know that we are in need of election workers,” West said. “So if you’re interested, you can come down here to the office and we can get you signed up. There is a required training in order to become an election worker. And then we would assign you to one of the various election polling locations throughout the county on election day, which is March the 19th. It is a paid opportunity. You get $30 dollars for training and then $145 for working election day.”

West said election days make for a long day because polls open at 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. then are followed by equipment tear down and packing.

“It’s an opportunity to provide community service, to get to meet some neighbors and friends, depending on where you’re assigned to, and you get to kind of see a little bit of how things… how an election works from the other side of the table. So it is just a good opportunity to, to you know, be involved,” West said.

West encourages  young adults who may be looking for community service experience to add to their college applications or resumes to visit their office located at 7th and Market Street in Zanesville for further details.
