Ohio’s Only State Tree Nursery Coming to Zanesville

ZANESVILE, OH – Ohio’s forests are about to get a little greener, as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry has unveiled plans for a new state tree nursery in Zanesville after a bill was signed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
Located on a division of Forestry-owned property in Zanesville, the Buckeye State Tree Nursery is where tiny tree seedlings will start their big journey. The nursery is set to sprout a variety of native tree species and tackle the regional shortage of suitable tree seedlings while supporting various conservation initiatives in Ohio.
“There’s a great demand that we have for native grown Ohio trees. This is going to give us the opportunity to do this. There’s no other one in the state of Ohio. Frankly, we’ve been waiting a long time to get this done. I’m really happy to have it done,” Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine said.
Operated by the ODNR, the tree-seedling nursery will support essential ODNR initiatives, like the H2Ohio program and the Girl Scout Tree Promise to plant 250,000 trees in Ohio by 2026. The initiative is also expected to foster community engagement in tree planting and conservation activities.
“I think this is just one more thing to get people excited about planting their own trees. If you can get trees that are sources right here in the state of Ohio, this is a very good thing. We’re going to use these obviously on state property, but they’re ultimately going to be available to the public as well,” DeWine said.
Work on establishing the Buckeye State Tree Nursery will begin immediately. For additional information, visit the ODNR website.
