Muskingum Women Bowlers’ Win National Championship
After a long season of practice, travel and matches, the Muskingum University Bowling Club Team returned home this past weekend after reaching national status.
One of just twelve teams to advance to Anderson, Indiana in search of the Collegiate Club National Championship. The women advanced out of the pool play in the double elimination tournament. They faced in-state foe Ohio State. Muskingum won by one in the first match, lost 3-1 in the second and then eliminated the Buckeyes 3-1 in the third match. Ultimately, they returned home with the National Championship Trophy.
“Being able to come in with one goal from the very beginning and achieving it was amazing,” said Senior Muskingum Kaylee Hauck. “We are no longer the boys’ shadow. We are paving our own way to achieve everything we want to achieve. We wanted people on First Team All-American and we have that. We wanted a National Championship Trophy, we have that. Now, we’ve really set the bar for incoming classes to try to beat us.”
“It just felt great being there and being able to bowl. The fact we won our pool was amazing because we were going against so many great teams,” added freshman Tayler Clark. “We just kept with the attitude of one game at a time and we just needed to do the best we can.”
The men made history by being the first 16 seed to defeat a one see in tournament history. They defeated Weber International 4-0. They finished fifth at nationals with several fantastic individual bowlers.
“I led the Michigan Sectional,” explained junior Evan Thro. “I ended up finishing 17th in the singles in the country and then the team we qualified for ITCs and ended up finishing fifth. To finish fifth in the nations feels pretty good.”
The Men’s Bowling Team lost to Weber and Wichita to end their tournament run.
