Groundhog Unearths Grave at Greenwood Cemetery

ZANESVILLE, OH – A groundhog’s search for a burrow has led to an unusual find at the Greenwood Cemetery in Zanesville.

The creature’s routine digging exposed human remains that were buried in 1945. The incident occurred last Friday, April 19th. The remains, identified as those of Mrs. Winter, were reinterred in a cremation vault donated by the Snouffer Funeral Home.

“Unfortunately, there was a groundhog that disrupted a grave. Some human remains were found, and it was just on my heart to take care of it properly. We took care of it with a sealed urn vault,” Snouffer Funeral Home Director/Owner Josh Snouffer said.

A small yet heartfelt ceremony including a prayer was held this morning to lay Mrs. Winter to rest once again.

“I’d like to thank the cemetery and everybody for allowing this to be a proper burial, and to have Mrs. Winter lay to rest finally and properly,” Snouffer said.

This is the second time in four years that an incident like this has happened in the area.
