Coach Cowgill and His Seniors: A Bond Like No Other

NEW CONCORD, OH  – Coach Steve Cowgill for the John Glenn softball team has been around for quite awhile and seen quite a lot. But his relationship with the three seniors on his team is like no other.

Cowgill: “I think it all boils down to the three seniors and their leadership that they have exhibited this year. Because we start three seniors and then there is six sophomores in the starting lineup.”

For as much praise as he heaps on his players, his players say the same about him.

Sydney Marshall, Senior Pitcher: “He’s really just trusted me in really high pressure situations, I feel like he knows that he can lean on me if he has to, if I have to get us out of a jam or something like that, I think that he really just trusts me, and it makes me feel more confident in my ability.”

Alivia Boothe, Senior Catcher: “Oh, ‘Coach Co’, he’s impacted my life like no other. He’s helped me with school, sports, everything in life. I text him as soon as I get good news, bad news, first guy I talk to. He’s amazing, awesome person.”

Sarah Wayne, Senior Infielder: “He definitely stepped up a lot. He was a leader for the outfield individually freshman year, but now that he’s head coach, he’s a leader for all of us.”

Now that we know how his players feel about him as a coach, what do they think about him as an athlete?

“Who throws harder, you or him?”

Marshall: “Oh, me for sure.”

“Who can hit more home runs, you or him?”

Boothe: “Oh definitely me.”

“Who has a better arm, you or him?”

Wayne: “I’d probably say…I don’t know. Probably me hopefully.”

With that debate settled, it’s time for the seniors to describe their coach in only one word.

Wayne: “An encouragement.”

Boothe: “Awesome. He’s awesome. He’s the best coach.”

Marshall: “He’s very passionate about the game, he’s definitely…he always really enjoys the game.”

Okay so maybe easier said than done, but for Coach Cowgill, it was pretty simple talking about his seniors.

Cowgill: “Resilient. We’ve had some losses this year, but their attitude and their confidence, I don’t think was shaken.”

A bond like no other, as Coach Cowgill and his seniors go for one last run to the OHSAA tournament.
