National History Day Competition

SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Many Muskingum County School Districts participate in various national competitions that promote civic education through multiple forms of communication.
Maysville High School has multiple students who competed in multiple categories at the state National History Day competition to qualify for the national contest that will take place next month at the University of Maryland.
Maysville High School Junior William Stoepfel won the Documentary category by creating a video regarding the 1972 Bloody Sunday Massacre.
“I had to learn how to edit… for the second time. So that was a lot of fun,” Stoepfel said. “But I think the hardest part was definitely getting in touch with a lot of the primary sources. Like I was able to interview three people luckily. I interviewed a Boston College Post-Doctorate Rebecca Young, a former leader of Bloody Sunday Trust Jules Campbell and the sister of one of the unfortunately killed Jean Hegarty. That was definitely the hardest part because two of them live in Northern Ireland. So time difference is very hard.”
The National History Day Contest allows students to present their topics via a: Documentary, Website, Museum Exhibit and performance.
Maysville High School Junior Scarlet Price and Fellow Student Emma Rush will travel to Maryland as well for winning the state competition with their website project concerning a Supreme Court case that involved reproductive rights.
“My partner and I’s topic is the 1972 Supreme Court Case of Eisenstadt V. Baird and it’s what gave all women equal access to birth control,” Price said. “Because prior to this case only married women had access. Our project focuses on not only the case but the man involved because he was a big activist for women’s reproductive rights. We also got the opportunity to interview him so that was really cool.”
Maysville High School Student Chesney Carter placed third in the state National History Day competition for her efforts in the Individual Performance category, which qualifies her as an alternate for the nationals.
