21st Annual MLK Jr. Prayer Breakfast

In his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said his dream was that our nation would live up to the true meaning of it’s creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

Monday morning over 400 community members gathered at the North Terrace Church of Christ for the 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast to celebrate that equality. The Prayer Breakfast also honors his legacy by awarding 27 students with the MLK Jr. Book Scholarship.

Kathy Brantley, founder and president of the MLK Prayer Breakfast Committee feels this event is a great reflection on the community.

“Look around, this room is absolutely filled with wonderful people, a diverse community, in which we have here in Zanesville. So we are very happy and proud of the way they have embraced this program and the accomplishments of the students” said Brantley.

Scholarship recipient Kristoffer Tovar feels that this scholarship truly embodies the dream Doctor King had.

“To just express diversity, and what Martin Luther King wanted. He had a dream we’d be all equal and stuff like that and then that is just what it is. We are getting scholarships so we can be equal to everyone else” said Tovar.

Each of the 27 students will receive $500 to help pay for books when they begin their college careers.
