MCLS Looks to Spark the Love of Reading Within Adults
ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Library System is trying to spark the love of reading with adults.
MCLS offers Adult Literacy Counseling to any adult looking to learn how to read or to hone their skills.
Monica Quinn, the Adult Literacy Specialist at the John McIntire Library, said you can come in for help regardless of your reading level. She said that it is sometimes harder for adults to reach out and ask for help, which is why they created this program.
“Knowledge is power and the more we can help people understand that we are there for them,” Quinn said. “Whether they need help learning or just getting general knowledge or learning to read, we’re here for them, we have resources, and this is a journey we can go on together.”
Quinn said if you’re interested in joining the Adult Literacy program, all you’ll need to do is head to the library and speak with her. She will then look over your information and pair you up with a tutor best suited to help you with your learning needs.
Quinn said the best part of these sessions is that you get to pick the time that works best for you because life can get busy.
“Asking for help is hard, especially when we learn to read, typically, when we’re kids and so it’s hard for an adult to ask for help,” Quinn explained. “But I think of it like, if my car breaks down, I’m going to ask for help. I don’t know how to do that, and I’m not embarrassed about that. We need to normalize asking for help whether it’s you know, like I said, learning to fix your car, or learning to read, it’s okay.”
