Clarence “Ed” Clewell

Clarence “Ed” Clewell III, 69, of Cambridge, died Thursday, October 24, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Ed was born June 30, 1955 in Byesville, Ohio to Kay (Jones) Clewell of Byesville and the late Clarence “Buster” Clewell II. Ed was a 1973 graduate of Meadowbrook High School, where he was a recognized three-sport athlete and later attended Findlay University.
Ed was a long-time member of the Cambridge Country Club; a supporter and past coach of the John Glenn Biddy Football League, a member of Shriners International, the Free & Accepted Masons Guernsey Lodge #66, and a past member of the Cambridge Eagles and Cambridge Elks. He was well-known in the area for his 45-year career in the car business, initially with Dunning Chevrolet before starting his own businesses: Clewell Auto Sales and Clewell Ford. Ed spent the last 15 years of his career at Cambridge Used Cars; the majority of those years working alongside his brothers Dusty and Bussy Clewell.
He was known for his infectious laugh, intense fear of snakes, gracious heart and immense love of his family and friends. He was a fan of Ohio State Athletics; a long-time dirt-track racing car owner and, a supporter (sometimes reluctantly) of the Cleveland Browns. Though his biggest accomplishments in life were his seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; he adored the time he spent watching their sporting events and activities.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Valerie (Huntsman) Clewell, whom he married December 29, 1974; a daughter, Cristin (Zack) Canter; two sons, Cortney (Beth) Clewell and Christopher (Kate) Clewell; his mother, Kay Clewell; two brothers, Dusty (Darla) Clewell and Bussy (Santa) Clewell; two sisters, Jean Pounds and June Hogan; seven grandchildren: Clayton Clewell, Tyler Clewell, Rory Clewell, Sam Taylor, Henry Taylor, Willow Canter and Storm Canter; one great-granddaughter Amelia Clewell; sisters-in-law: Diane (Fred) Mottice, Deb (Joe) Huntsman, Vicki (Dan) Huntsman, brother-in-law Scott (Misty) Huntsman, as well as sister-in-law Rachel (Jeff) McKirahan and brother-in-law Ron (Jen) Davis, whom were like surrogate children. He is also survived by his best friends and neighbors Dennis and Shelley Green, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his mothers-in-law, Joanne Ahrendts and Velma Huntsman; fathers-in-law Ronald Davis, Sr., Kennon Huntsman, and Keith Ahrendts and his brothers-in-law, Virgil Pounds and Rick Hogan.
Family and friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday (October 29, 2024) at the Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (October 30, 2024) at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, with Evan. Mark Beros officiating. Burial will follow at New Concord Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Rolling Hills Foundation Scholarship Fund or the Hope Lodge at Cleveland Clinic. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
