Safety Days at OUZ

Each year during safety days at Ohio University Zanesville, speakers talk to students and community members about staying safe.

The director of the criminal justice program at Zane State College, John Gibson, spoke Monday about dealing with disgruntled people. His talk focused on picking up on cues that people give leading up to a violent situation.

“The importance of it is, we’re living in a very violent society currently,” Gibson said. “I think a lot of times, people, when they start to deal with disgruntled people, with angry people, there are some things they can do if they understand how to pick up on those indications of possible further violence.”

Gibson said people know what to do in these situations, but it just involves being able to apply what they know to certain situations.

“A lot of the stuff that we talk about people already know it, but they just don’t even realize that they know it,” Gibson said. “If you really pay attention to the words coming out of somebody’s mouth or possibly they’re non verbal language.”

According to Gibson, safety days focuses on educating people on potentially dangerous situations.
