ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s administration includes many healthcare education programs as part of its Workforce Development agenda.

The Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center recently announced a healthcare internship program they will be implementing through funding acquired through the Industry Sector Partnership grant awarded by the State of Ohio.

“Well first off, we’re very excited to receive this grant.” MVESC Superintendent Monte Bainter said. “We’re real excited about that. That we’re able to partner with… in the needs of our community. Genesis Healthcare Systems, Zane State College and The Strategic Council for Higher Ed. So we’re able to form those partnerships, but at the end of the day, it impacts our kids. So we’re able to provide internships right in those settings. We’re able to pay our students here in the region to work right in those fields.”

MVESC is connecting area students with the Genesis Healthcare System to get a hands-on approach into the career fields that they are studying to get into. The internship opportunity allows the students to experience the day-to-day routines to see how they compare with their preconceived expectations.

“Well this is the second year for this, first year for this grant,” Bainter said. “But I think, you know, talking with different… of the educational leaders here in our community is, you know, what opportunities we provide for maybe that student that’s going to go right into the career field, so, they have that workforce piece, that career piece so that when they graduate they’re going right in that direction.”

Bainter noted that this healthcare based, paid internship program could lead to more efforts between education providers networking with industry leaders in other career sectors to help give area students a jumpstart into the careers of their interest.
