False Alarm at Muskingum University: Campus Responds with Caution and Care

NEW CONCORD, OH – A scary situation unfolded at Muskingum University on February 24th, but authorities have confirmed it was a false alarm.

Around 6:35 PM, law enforcement responded to a report of a potential active shooter on campus. As a precaution, the university’s emergency notification system was activated immediately to alert students and staff, and a shelter-in-place order was issued while officers investigated. After investigation, officials say the report stemmed from a misunderstanding involving a student dispute.

“A report went out about a potential active shooter. We have a notification system in place that worked beautifully. So, that report went immediately to our campus police, local law enforcement, and also to our communication team so we could let the campus know that we needed to shelter-in-place,” Muskingum University President Sue Hasseler said.

The situation quickly escalated through social media. University officials urge students to rely on official sources for updates and to avoid spreading unverified information online. Despite the fear and uncertainty, the campus community came together, checking on one another and offering support during the lockdown.

“I am very much hoping that our campus community understands the importance of very responsible communication. Much of this challenge last evening was due to some challenging information being shared on social media. One of the lessons learned is to be really careful. Let’s know our facts before we share them. The other thing is that this is a community that is going to step up, we’re going to solve the problems, we’re going to reach out, and we’re going to do it in a caring way,” Hasseler said.

The shelter in-place order was lifted once officials confirmed there was no danger. The safety of students and staff remains in the university’s top priority.
