Zane State College Grows Awareness for National Plant a Flower Day
ZANESVILLE, OH – National Plant a Flower Day is just one week away, and what better way to celebrate than by getting your hands dirty?
Zane State College invited Mid-East and Coshocton County Career Center students to its Natural Resource Center and campus for a hands-on celebration. Guests had the chance to tour the facility, learn about conservation efforts, and even plant a flower to take home.
“During the event, we showcased our wildlife program. They had the opportunity to see our wildlife facility. They’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of our wildlife program. Then they’ll also be able to tour campus that way they can get acquainted with our campus life here at Zane State. They also have a take home item which is a seed ball. They can spread the love by planting these seeds in their gardens,” ZSC College Credit Plus Advisor Teara Pierce said.
But planting a flower is more than just adding some color to a garden. Lindsey Boaz, an instructor at ZSC, explained why it’s important for people to get involved with planting and protecting natural spaces.
“Some people might take it for granted. Like the plants are always here the flowers always here, but they don’t always realize they’re here because people put in effort. There’s a lot of development that goes on. If you don’t protect that natural space, it’s probably going to get developed. Even if it is developed, there are ways that you can modify that development and just make it appealing for everyone’s well-being in wildlife because we all take a part in it. It factors into the human well-being aspect so we bring them in and show them some of the skills that you would need the hands-on skills to help maintain our natural resources,” ZSC Instructor Lindsey Boaz said.
National Plant a Flower Day is March 12th, and you can celebrate at home by planting your own and giving back to the environment.
