ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The general election is 29 days away. Area candidates participated in a forum at the John McIntire Library.

In the race for Muskingum County Commissioner, Dale Phillips is running against Commissioner Cindy Cameron. The term begins January 2, 2017.

“I am just a small business man. I am not flashy and I am not a politician by any means,” Phillips said. “I have been a trustee in Springfield Township for 17 years. I love that job dearly. I’m a person that wants more. I feel that the commissioner job is basically the trustee job on steroids so that’s my more.”

Commissioner Cameron tells us why she should be re-elected.

“We have an open door policy anyone is welcome to come. We meet on Mondays and Thursdays,” Cameron said. “I feel that I’ve made myself available. If I don’t know the answer, I’ve try to help the person or I get back to them. I answer any phone call or any correspondence. I try to be honest and stay to that commitment, that I will do what’s best for Muskingum County and invite anyone to come to any session if they have any concerns.”

In another Commissioner race Mollie Crooks is running against incumbent

Commissioner Jerry Lavy.

And this term begins January 3rd, we spoke to Mollie Crooks about her platform why she decided to run for County Commissioner.

“A County Commissioner’s job is to drive economic development,” Crooks said. “Recruiting new businesses and expanding the businesses that we here. But, also it’s looking at all aspects of a community; whether it’s agriculture, the arts, recreation, infrastructure, education there’s so many of those important factors that all come together. When all of those different issues are are being addressed collaboratively and jointly among other elected officials and our citizens, then we will achieve that vision of a better Muskingum County.”

Commissioner Lavy told us why he should be re-elected.

“I know Muskingum County is financially fit,” Lavy said. “I’ve done my job and my commitment to this community. When I first came into office it was pretty devastating. We didn’t know if we were going to have to close doors for one day a week. But by keeping us a float by making the cuts, by wisely spending we were able to keep the county afloat. We have maintained that and keep building our resources and our revenue up. And that’s plan to keep it there.”

Although each candidate running for county commissioner did differ on certain issues, there is something they all agreed on; making Muskingum County a great place to work, live, and raise a family.
