Paddle for Heroes Makes a Stop in Zanesville on 160-Mile Journey

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Paddle for Heroes team is making waves once again! They’re on their 9th annual journey, and they made a special stop in Zanesville today.

The Paddle for Heroes crew kicked off their 160-mile paddle of the Muskingum River, on May 18th, launching from Mount Vernon, Ohio. They’re making their way to Marietta, with plans to arrive on May 23rd. But Tuesday, they took a well-earned breather right here in Zanesville at Muddy Misers Restaurant.

“We do it to raise awareness for veterans’ issues such as PTSD and even just comradery and reflection. We encourage the paddlers to reflect on their service and the service of others,” Paddle for Heroes Vice President Joey Butts said.

This year, they’re paddling in honor of Doug McLarnan. McLarnan was a veteran, a first responder and a tireless volunteer.

“Last year, we lost Doug McLarnan. He was also an army veteran; he served in Korea. He also spent his whole life serving others, either in his career and in his hobbies. He was part of the founding board members for the Kokosing Gap Trail, worked with the ACA, he was also a social worker, and he was a volunteer firefighter. So, he was just an all-around guy and always down to help people,”  Butts said.
