$35K Muskingum County Safe Communities Grant

ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Â The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department received a safe community grant.
The grant was $35,000 for the Muskingum County Safe Communities Coalition.
Project Director, Jessica Emerick, said the purpose of the grant is to decrease the number of fatal and serious crashes on local roads.
“[It] is a collaboration between the Health Department, local law enforcement, highway patrol, the EMA and then other local agencies,” said Emerick. “Our goal is to keep Muskingum County drivers safe ultimately.”
The initiative is focused on impaired driving, seat belt use, motorcycle safety and the prevention of distracted driving. Along with education, the grant will get more patrol cars on the street.
Sheriff Matt Lutz from the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office said he wants to make the community a safe place to live, and the extra patrol cars are a preventative and proactive way to do that.
“Our normal guys are dealing with all the calls that we have normally, these folks that come out with the overtime grant are basically focusing on one thing and thats traffic enforcement,” said Lutz.
Lutz said the initiative is aimed to promote safety in the community.
