Women’s Self Defense Conference Coming to Coshocton
COSHOCTON, OH – A Peer Center is getting ready to host a conference focused on helping women learn essential self defense techniques.
Lemon-Aid Outreach will be hosting a Women’s Self Defense Conference on Sunday, August 24th at 1 and 3PM at the Coshocton Village Inn and Suites.
Larry Monroy, the Director of Peer Services, says this is a peer led self defense class to help those who have never attended a class like this before.
He says a lot of times when you head into a martial arts type class, the end goal is to gain a new title or upgrade belts but this conference is very different.
“It’s for practical, same day use, situational awareness and self defense from a peer standpoint, from a peer support standpoint.” Monroy said. “Versus a conventional martial arts class or even basic self defense class or boxing class.”
Monroy says participants will be learning the martial arts form, Krav Maga, which he says is a very serious form of self defense and added that it’s been battle field tested.
He also says sometimes it can be hard to enter a regular class with a lot of people who have more experience, which can deter someone from learning life saving techniques.
“Before you have found your voice and before you have found your set of boundaries, it can be a little intimidating to walk into a class where there’s everything up to black belts.” Monroy said. “It could be kind of difficult for them to cross that threshold and walk in and also because of the format that design is a constant business, in other words they want you to come back over and over and hopefully you excel over the years. What we’re interested in doing is specific to immediate training that is usable right now because it’s peer led, by an instructor that’s been around domestic abuse and even anxiety.”
The Women’s Self Defense Conference is free to attend; you just have to register because seats are limited.
