Tax Time

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The United Way Muskingum, Perry and Morgan County offers free tax preparation for residents earning less than $50,000 per year.
Last year, more than 400 people dialed 2-1-1 to schedule their visit at the Zanesville headquarters to have their taxes professionally filed and submitted to the IRS.
“If you have all your tax documents, call 2-1-1. The schedule does fill up pretty quickly… So that’s what we, you know, are just trying to get that word out. And yeah, it is definitely a free service. And even if you have tax questions you can you know give our office a call and we can try to support you or lead you to the right direction, you know the best we can,” Community Impact Manager Katie Grubbs said.
The call to 2-1-1 will ask you basic questions that will provide the preparer with the details needed for selecting the proper forms. Sessions can range from 30 minutes to an hour at most.
“It is very important to make sure you have all your tax documents you need. Your W-2’s, any 1099-R’s, any 1098’s. Because sometimes there is information already within the IRS and if you don’t have all that stuff, it might reject right away. And so it’s important to have all that stuff right from the get-go so that we don’t have a rejection issue come about,” Tax Coordinator Melissa Lynn said.
The United Way of MPM is always looking for tax clinic volunteers who may be looking for additional experience or building their resume. The tax clinic is anticipated to begin serving the public by the end of January and end in early April.
