Community honors fallen soldiers on Peace Officers Memorial Day

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Fraternal Order of Police in Zanesville honored local and nationwide officers that were killed in the line of duty.
Family members of fallen officer’s, local officials, and community members, all attended the Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, Saturday morning.
Nationwide, 44 officer’s have fallen in the line of duty this year. They hoped this event would show all current men and women in the force, how much support they have.
“There’s a lot going on in the world today, said Angie Hammer, F.O.P.A President. They don’t get the recognition and appreciation that they deserve.”
Featured speakers were Muskingum County Sheriff, Matt Lutz and Zanesville Police Chief, Tony Coury.
F.O.P President, Steve Jones, talked about officers that were lost from Muskingum County and the surrounding areas. The first being Horace Porter in 1905. The other four were Erwin Tate in 1939, Henry Ritchason in 1954, Sanford Stanley in 1976, Michael Lutz in 1994, and Robert Tanner in 2002.
The event featured a three rifle volley by the VFW Post 1058, and taps played by Gavin Newton, a senior at Zanesville High School.
