Flu season is on its way

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Rambo Memorial Health Center received a shipment of flu shots and they are encouraging people to start coming in.
Flu season is coming up and for adults they should get their flu shots by the end of October.
Gloria Brown, Director of the Rambo Memorial Health Center, said, “Some children 6 months thru eight years of age will require two doses of flu vaccine for adequate protection from flu. Children in this age group who are getting vaccinated for the first time will need two doses of flu vaccine spaced at least 4 weeks apart.”
Example: 1st year your child gets 2 flu shots, from then on he/she only needs one flu shot per year.
Example: 1st year your child gets one flu shot, 2nd year he/she gets one flu shot; this child should get the 2nd flu shot spaced after 4 weeks. After that this child will only need to get one flu shot every year.
One time between the ages of 6 months – 8 years the child should get 2 flu shots spaced four weeks apart. Every other year the child will need only one flu shot.
“In the last few years it’s been coming in January or February, the really bad part of it,” Brown said. “It also starts earlier than that and people in October and November are coming up with the flu and last year was a really bad year. Many people sick. Hopefully this year is a lot better.”
Brown said they never really know when flu season gets here so it is good to be prepared. For residents of Muskingum County it is $5 to get the shot and for anyone else it is $20.
“Lots of time’s people came in and say “I don’t get the flu shot because it makes me sick” Well the flu shot can’t make you sick,” Brown said. “The flu shot itself is not a live vaccine so it can’t make you sick.”

There is an event Friday, September 21st for seniors, they can get their flu shots and receive free health screenings as well. There is also a flu shot clinic with the Zanesville Fire Department on Saturday, September 29th for Safety Day at Lowes. You can find them wearing dressed up like heroes and wearing capes to help the children who show up feel more comfortable.
