Local DAR Chapter celebrates 125 years

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A local organization is celebrating 125 years to the day.
The Muskingum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution gathered Saturday to honor Fanny Russell Brush, the founder of the chapter. Vice Regent Mary Ann DeVolld said that on October 13th, 1893 the first DAR meeting was held in the home of Fanny Russell Brush. Devolld says today they met to place a special marker at her grave.
“We just felt it was fitting that she be honored for all that she did and really got the ball rolling for a lot of contributions to the community and we continue to try and do that too,” said DeVolld.
Devolld said the Daughters of the American Revolution is a service group that focuses on historic preservation, education, and patriotism. She said they also do a lot of work with veterans.
“But I think most of the focus that you’ll hear about for us is when we honor our veterans, we do a lot with veterans,” said DeVolld. “Now we also try and send things to our active duty military as well.”
Devolld said the organization is open to any woman 18 years or older who is descendant of someone connected to the Revolution. She said if interested in joining or discovering if you are connected to someone from the revolutionary war, you can contact them through their Facebook page.
