Making Healthy Foods More Accessible in SE Ohio

A recent Ohio State University report shows that rural areas in Southeastern Ohio are prime for "food deserts," and about 45 percent of Ohioans lives in rural areas.

Researchers say "food deserts" are known as locations that have limited access to healthy and fresh foods.

The report discovered that about 25% of Ohioans are further than a 10 minute drive to the grocery store. It also indicates from that statistic that about 4% of people who live in rural areas don’t have a car to get them to and from the store.

Ohio Department of Agriculture officials say it shows a great need for a source of more accessible food in Appalachia Ohio.
