Local Police Department Talks Halloween Safety

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – As children get ready to wear their costumes and parents send them out trick or treating on Wednesday, there are some safety concerns to be mindful of.
Halloween is always a fun and exciting time for children and families, but safety should always be the main focus. Zanesville Police Chief, Tony Coury, says since the hours of trick or treating are during the night, make sure the children are visible in the dark. He recommends putting reflector tape on candy buckets or the costumes, and using a flashlight to stand out.
“You want to make sure that your kids are visible out on the streets. Whether the bucket they’re carrying, that they’re walking in pairs if they don’t have a parent with them. Make sure you’re in a pair. You just want to make sure the kids are off the side of the streets, not walking in the traffic,” said Coury.
Coury also advises for the drivers out and about this evening, to drive slowly and be wary of their surroundings.
“Slow down and be mindful that there are kids out walking during Halloween times. And you know, we don’t want anybody hit, we don’t want any accidents. We definitely just don’t want any young children run over by a car because somebody was not paying attention to what they were doing,” he added.
Chief mentions there will be officers out in the neighborhoods to be around in case of an emergency. The Zanesville Police Department wants to make sure that their officers are visible to the public, but also for the children to have a safe Halloween.
