A Man and His Pet Goat Raises Money for Orphanage
On a journey to raise money for charity, one man is walking cross-country with his pet goat. In this week’s Community Close-Up WHIZ’s Brittany Clark shares the story.
"I remember kind of earlier on, when I had that opportunity to step out, you know I was like whatever it takes I ‘ll do anything," said Steve Wescott. "If I would’ve known it would’ve involved walking across america with a goat I might have dailed it back."
Steve Wescott of Seattle, WA began his journey on May 2nd of 2012 with his goat Leeroy Brown that suddenly died last year. But, shortly after he got a new friend named Miles and got back on track.
"I think when you kind of start to get closer to the gospel and closer to that relationship with the lord you get this scary feeling like, I think everybody is scared that he’s going to send you somewhere you don’t wanna go," said Wescott.
Steve was spotted walking on route 40 in Zanesville Friday and stopped to get a bite to eat at Margie B’s. Wescott said his goal is to try to raise $200,000 to help his best friend who started an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya.
"He’s got 34 kids on a half acres with some chickens and what we’re trying to do is buy property and start farming that we can be as self sufficient as we possibly can an not rely on donations. The whole thing about this project is about self sufficient, sustain ability. My project is call ‘Needle2Square’ because, I am from the Space Needle Seattle, WA to Time Square in New York City," said Wescott.
Wescott said this entire journey started with him following the gospel and simply just being a loyal friend.
"People always think that this is really about the kids, and it is it genuinely is. But, that’s my best friend over there and my loyalty to him is endless. I could let him just do it alone," said Wescott. "Then I am a christian, and I think both of us we just wanted faith to be more then get us saved and get us to heaven. We wanted to make a difference in the world and this is how we did it."
