Cam Willett Saves Best for Last, Returns Home a Zanesville State Champion

ZANESVILLE, OH – Not everyone can call themselves a state champion in sports. Recent Zanesville graduate Camron Willet now can, who had one more medal to collect at the state championship meet.

The weather could only delay Cam for so long, after he was set to initially compete in the Division II boys 300 meter hurdles finals on Saturday. One rainy day later, and he was finally off to the races on Sunday afternoon. A personal best, and school record 37.92 seconds later, Willett found himself crossing the finish line before all the rest. He becomes the first track and field state champion for the Blue Devils in over 30 years, since Erika Goines’ shot put state title in 1994.

Even after a police and fire truck escort home just hours later, Cam could still hardly believe his state final feat.
“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, it still has me surprised” says Willett, who is the first Blue Devils hurdles champion since Joe Thomas in 1981. “I worked hard and I had a slight chance thinking I was going to do it, I gave it everything I had, and it turned out to be the best feeling in the world, knowing I accomplished what I wanted.
After years of waiting to reach the pinnacle of his sport, Willett remains proud to do it wearing the Zanesville colors.
“It’s the best feeling in the world, knowing I’m a Blue Devil champion forever.”
Willett leaves behind a Zanesville legacy that will be difficult to leap over any time soon.
