Local Fire Department Hosts 48th Annual Mother’s Day ‘Chicken Barbecue’

More than 1,200 mothers and their families gather to enjoy a tasty home cooked meal.

The Washington Township Fire Department held it’s 48th Annual Mother’s Day ‘Chicken Barbecue’ fundraiser on Sunday. President and Safety Officer, Bruce Burley said this tradition started in 1967 and has grown ever since.

"It honors mothers, it give sons and daughters a place to take their mothers or husbands to take their wife and get a nice home cooked meal. It started last night we started cooking the chickens around 1 a.m this morning and we’ve been cooking all night and I think the last one came out around 9:30 this morning," said Burley.

Burley said the fire department began prepping for this event weeks in advance. There were 18 workers from the fire department, plus their families who helped to put it all together.

"We just hope to continue it on as long as we can. As long as people come eat our chicken we will keep cooking it," said Burley.

All proceeds from this fundraiser helps pay for the daily expenses of the fire department.
