Local Vocational School Becomes a Pathway for Future Careers
For years vocational schools have held a stereotype as the place for “misunderstood teens” but, now that perception is changing.
Mid-East Career and Technology Centers offers hands-on experience and provides career preparatory program options for students. Director of Mid-East’s Zanesville Campus, Mike Hawley, said the students have an extra advantage toward their future careers.
“It’s been a great push and emphasis on career and technical education. It has really changed over the years. I can remember as a teacher in the 80’s at that point students here would only receive one English class and one government class for their academic courses and now they can take all of the same courses that they can take at their home schools,” said Hawley. “They have the same opportunities to advance to college from here as they would at any other school along with the career technical training that they can get here.”
Hawley said Mid-East offers 24 skill-training programs for both high school junior and seniors, as well as, adult students.
“The students that come here I look at them as having a step ahead and having an advantage. But, the big difference is that they chose to come here,” said Hawley.
If you’re interested in enrolling for the next school year on Tuesday may 3rd, you can stop by Mid-East during it’s ‘New Parent, New Student night’ to learn more.
