Muskingum History & Current Events

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – As America celebrates its 250th birthday, Muskingum History is busily involved in local events that commemorate our area’s role in helping the nation develop its identity.

Muskingum History Director of Operations Carrie Forgacs and Executive Director Larisa Harper announced a few upcoming public events that showcase just how prominent of a role that Muskingum County played.

“A Visit With Madison, James Madison will be portrayed,” Harper said. “And the event is June 17th, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Muskingum County Library. And that will be primarily for children, so we hope to see lots of families bring their young-ones there. And then that same day, at 5:30, James Madison will make the trip to Putnam Presbyterian Church and talk to families or adults for more detailed information that maybe children wouldn’t be as quite as interested in.”

Madison, who was our nation’s fourth president, had actually visited Zanesville. His reenactor will be explaining the roles he played as a nation builder and President. On July 4th, Muskingum History will be dedicating the Trailblazers and Founders Memorial at Confluence Park.

“The excitement of the July Fourth event, the museums will not be open that day,” Forgacs said. “We will be celebrating at the park with Muskingum 250, with Muskingum County History. So we will be closed that day to celebrate that Fourth of July Celebration with our programming. We will be present at the park with activities and programs.”

Muskingum History will also be present at this weekend’s Zane’s Trace Commemoration across the 6th Street Bridge in the Putnam neighborhood. They will have a table at the festival and be offering free tours of the Stone Academy and the Dr. Increase Mathews House, just a few blocks away.
