Thomas Flegge

Thomas S. Flegge died peacefully on the morning of June 13, 2026, at Morrison House in Zanesville, Ohio at the age of 92.
Thomas was born on August 27, 1933, in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Columbus North High School and earned the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouts. In the summer of 1953, Tom worked as a lifeguard (among many other duties) at Round Lake Christian Assembly, where his parents were caretakers. That July, he met a camp counselor who sang a duet with him at the camp Vesper service. They sang “I Am Satisfied with Jesus” and the rest is history. Barbara Ann Lawler and Thomas Flegge were married in May of 1955, had three children, and enjoyed sixty-four happy and blessed years together.
Tom graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ashland College in 1957 and earned his Teaching Certificate in 1958. He went on to enjoy a long career in the insurance industry, eventually owning the Spaid-Flegge Insurance Agency of Lorain, Ohio. Tom was honored to receive the Old Man on the Fence award from Westfield Insurance Companies in 1996 and retired in 1998.
Tom called Northeast, Ohio home for much of his life and was active in many community organizations in Lakewood and Amherst. He was a member of the Clifton-Gaston Allen Masonic Lodge #664 of Lakewood, Ohio where he served as Master in 1971, a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland and member of the Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland. Tom served as merit badge counselor and treasurer for the Boy Scouts in Amherst. He had the opportunity to travel with his wife to multiple countries in his lifetime. In retirement, he planned bus trips for the Seniors Citizens of Amherst, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Tom and Barbara moved to Primrose Retirement Community in Zanesville, Ohio in 2016. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Tom was a beloved and well-known figure wherever he went. He was quick to greet people with a big and cheerful welcome, always enjoyed a good conversation, and had an amazing knack for remembering details. Tom liked to say that “family is the most important thing in life” and he truly reflected this in how he lived. He will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Fay and Lilly (Rose) Flegge; son-in-law, William Wendt; sister-in-law, Kaylynn Wise; and his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Flegge.
He leaves behind his three children: Dawn (Timothy) Remster, Beth Ann Wendt, and Mark (Jeanne) Flegge; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
