Tri-Valley Archery Competition
Thanks to the Hunger Games movies, and shows like Arrow, archery has become the fastest growing sport in the world.
Today Tri-Valley Schools held their state qualifying archery competition. Over 460 students from teams all across Ohio came out to showcase their archery skills, and battle for a spot in the state competition. The Dog’s Middle School Archery Coach, Doug Lindsley, explains the competition.
"It’s an international shooting, so we shoot in meters. So they start at ten meters, and then they shoot fifteen meters."
Students then shoot in rounds in hopes of getting the highest number of points out of a possible 300. To keep the sport as fair as possible all archers use the same style of bow and arrows. The National Archery School Program is the fastest growing league sport in the country. Coach Lindsley believes the growth in popularity is due to the fairness of the sport.
"Any child can do it. We’ve had children in wheelchairs, we’ve had the kid that doesn’t fit into a group he is able to come in and this is his niche."
Students who choose to participate in the archery program must also have at least a 2.0 GPA and maintain a good school attendance record.
