In Perry County the race for county commissioner the republican candidate receiving the nod is Tad Barker who received 1,042 votes and the winner for the democratic party is Lonnie Woods receiving 1,040 votes. Aggressive police work in the Coshocton area has caused a housing issue for the county. The Ohio Department of Transportation is working hard to improve one of Zanesville's busiest roads. It seems that Maple avenue is always busy. In conjuction with the city of Zanesville, ODOT felt that a survey was necessary. Between the years 1997-99, the heavily congested route had more than 9-hundred accidents. This is the 26th season for the Lorena Sternwheeler...and Zanesville is proud to have her. As Lorena season is about to begin, Captain Jeff Hall and his crew are ready. Rides for the general public begin June 1st, and run through mid-October. Lorena has already been inspected by the Coast Guard and is in perfect condition. She will be closed on Mondays this season; Tuesdays through Sundays rides will be given at 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4:00 pm.
The Gus Macker tournament doesn't start for a month, but registration needs to be completed by this weekend. The tournament holds 850 teams total, and benefits the Zanesville Downtown Association. A big rally was held Monday to show support for the Zanesville city school bond issue. Voters will decide the 5.73 mills 27 year issue at the polls on Tuesday. The rain did not keep away the more than 3000 students, parents and faculty who gathered to show how much they support the bond issue. The Lancaster Post of the State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate an afternoon fatal crash. Troopers say 25-year-old Holly Cain of New Lexington was driving Westbound on State Route 37 when she lost control of her car and struck a guardrail. The car then overturned and Cain was ejected. A weeknd stabbing sent one man to the hospital for stitches. According to the Zanesville Police Deprtment, a 34-year-old suspect slashed the throat of 28-year-old John Medley Junior early Sunday morning outside a bar on Ridge Ave. The suspect's name is not being released pending charges, police do say the two men were acquaintances.
A Zanesville man could face up yo 8 years in prison after pleading guilty to slashing his girlfriend with a boxknife. According to Muskingum County Prosecutor, Mike Haddox, 50-year-old Richard Allen Valentine was in court Monday and pleaded guilty to one count of felonious assault. The incident happened at a residence on West Muskingum Ave. in February this year. The victim, Mary Draughn recovered from wounds to both the face and chest area.
