EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — No more rookie excuses for Thomas Tyner. Oregon's sophomore running back is ready to live up to the expectations that were heaped on him when he joined the Ducks last year.

As a true freshman Tyner was third on the Ducks with 711 yards rushing, and he scored nine touchdowns. He steadily improved and had a breakout in the Civil War rivalry game against Oregon State, with 22 carries for 140 yards and a score in Oregon's 36-35 victory....

BOSTON (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have acquired second baseman Gordon Beckham in a trade with the Chicago White Sox.

Beckham has struggled offensively this year, but he gives the AL West-leading Angels another sure-handed infielder with six seasons of major league experience. He turns 28 on Sept. 16.

The White Sox, who selected Beckham with the eighth overall pick in the 2008 draft, will receive a player to be named or cash in Thursday's trade....

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A better offense could offset any problems that surface for what has been a stout defense in Arizona.

Quarterback Carson Palmer says he's not sure you can fill the shoes of the three players the Cardinals lost up the middle on defense. Tackle Darnell Dockett was lost for the season with a knee injury in practice Monday. The team already was without both inside linebackers. Karlos Dansby left for Cleveland as a free agent and Daryl Washington is...

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) — It will remain a sore spot with Fred Couples until he's finally able to add the accomplishment to his resume.

For all the tournament's won during his career, Couples has still never won in the Seattle area, where he grew up.

Not that he's had many chances. With Seattle lacking a regular PGA Tour stop the most marquee events that Couples has participated were the 1998 PGA Championship and 2010 U.S. Senior Open, along with...

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Andy Roddick says he would like to have made one more appearance at the U.S Open, not for himself, but for his friend Mardy Fish.

Roddick and Fish, who has been suffering from an anxiety disorder, had sought to enter this year's doubles field with a wild card.

They were denied because Roddick, who has been retired for two years, has not been involved in the sport's drug testing protocols.

Roddick, speaking...

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Chargers might be among the few longing for Candlestick Park.

San Diego plays the San Francisco 49ers in a preseason game at their new Levi's Stadium on Sunday. That's the plan anyway.

There's been concern regarding the Levi's Stadium's playing surface since Wednesday, after the 49ers cut short their practice on it. San Francisco replaced portions of the Levi's Stadium loose turf on Thursday and said in a statement the field won'...
