Wear and tear on the roadways is often a topic of conversation when it comes to shale drilling.

On Thursday Muskingum County Engineer Doug Davis met with the county commissioners to go over permits.  Davis said it's important to maintain the roads before, during and after the drilling projects.

Zanesville is preparing for winter and offering a few reminders to residents.

Public Service Director Mike Sims said the city has appropriated enough in its budget to have salt available for the remainder of the year. He said they are contracted with the Department of Transportation for next year and doesn't foresee any issues of running out.

He said the crews have to be ready to clear roadways at any time.

Roads in Muskingum county will get a major face-lift this summer.

The area will see three projects which will resurface about 30 miles of roads and remark nearly 120 miles thanks to various grants.

"We were fortunate that the money became available," said Matt Russell from the Muskingum County Engineer's Office. "We kind of took advantage of it so we could try to make the roads a little safer."

Muskingum County plows are working on the roadways too, and County Engineer, Doug Davis, says it has been hard keeping up with the snow.

He says his office is using a different plan of attack with this storm than it did with last week's.

The lake-effect snow is finally settling down, but it has kept ODOT crews busy over the past several days.

That means a lot of trucks have been re-stocking on salt to treat the the area's interstates, US routes, and state routes.

"We've used about 50% of our salt capacity here at Muskingum County. We have 1500 pounds in order, " says ODOT spokeswoman Kate Stickle.

Snow plows were out in full force Saturday, trying to clear the roads.

Muskingum, Morgan, Perry, Guernsey and Licking Counties all saw more accidents and fender-benders than normal, but none had serious injuries. Drivers on the road this morning experienced slippery conditions, but by afternoon the roads were in better shape.

"Just the last few minutes I have been out they are very clear, haven't had any trouble, not slipping or sliding," says Tom Sulens....
