Christmas Tree Recycling Program Available in Zanesville

Trees

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Christmas has come and gone and as the community
prepares to ring in the new year tomorrow night, many are taking down
their yuletide decorations—including the Christmas tree. One common
mistake made when disposing of Christmas trees is simply placing them
by the curb for trash pick-up. Locally, Muskingum County residents
have the opportunity to safely recycle their trees free of charge.
Ike VanDyne, City of Zanesville Cemetery and Parks Superintendent,
says there are three drop sites for Christmas trees throughout the
city.

“They can bring
them to our drop sites here. We have three here in the City of
Zanesville. One is at Maple Hill—off of Taylor Street, the park
there—one is at the Street Department at 1084 Central Avenue; and
one is here at the fairgrounds. If they bring them here instead of
throwing them out with the trash, the Ohio Division of Wildlife will
come and make three pick-ups. They’ll take them down to Burr Oak
and put them in the lake down there.”

While placing
Christmas trees out with the trash will ensure that they end up in a
landfill, dropping them off at a designated site will help native
wildlife by providing habitats for fish.

“Putting them back
into the lakes and stuff for the fish—and habitat and stuff like
that—is one of the good things about it. Really, in the landfill
they’re just going to turn into compost.”

The last day for
Christmas tree recycling will be January 24, 2020. For more
information, contact the City of Zanesville Cemetery and Parks
Department.
