ZANESVILLE, OH – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists of the increase in deer-related traffic crashes.

Since October 1st, the Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol has investigated 53 deer crashes.

“We’re right in the middle of what we consider “The Peak” of deer crash season.” Sergeant Jeffrey Jirles with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. “October through December is the peak. So far we have investigated 53 deer crashes but for the most part they have only been property damage crashes.”

Recent data collected by the Patrol says that not only is colliding with a deer dangerous, it’s also a hefty price to pay for repairs.

The data show that the average insurance claim for a deer-vehicle collision in Ohio is almost $5,000.

Sgt. Jirles said the peak times of day to see deer are at dawn and around dusk.

“Most of our accidents have been around an hour before sunrise or an hour after sunset.” Jirles said. “One of the things we do recommend is if a deer runs out in front of you, apply your brakes and try to stay in the lane.”

Some other ways to help spot deer are using your high-beam headlights if there is no oncoming traffic, scan the road ahead of you, always wear your safety belt and stay alert.
