ZANESVILLE, OH – The Dug Road improvement project broke ground Tuesday.

Local and elected officials like Zanesville Mayor, Don Mason, and State Representative Adam Holmes joined in on the ground breaking at Putnam Hill Park.

Mayor Mason said this is an exciting day for the city as they enter the construction phase of this project.

“As many might have noticed, over the last few weeks, Shelly and Sands has been removing a lot of the timber, wooded areas, and brush,” Mason said. “Part of the plan, as the hillside gets cut back, the dirt and rocks are going to go into the ravine area and we’re going to make a larger park.”

Mayor Mason said the plan is to make this park one of the nicest in the city. He also said they are taking extra time to equip the park with a sanitation sewer and a storm sewer so that no major work will have to be done to the park for another 40 years. He also said this project will help bring the community closer together.

“As I’ve always said, the Y-Bridge is a confluence of two rivers. It is also what brings together 3 parts of our community,” Mason said. “Putnam Hill Park stood at the head of all that for our entire community to appreciate, to celebrate, and to overlook the rest of the city. It’s been limited so much over the last 6 years because it’s been hard to get to.”

This project was funded by the Ohio General Assembly, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, the EMA, and FEMA. Mayor Mason said in total this project will cost $4.7 Million.
