Cooking Up Literacy
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The 21st century is often referred to as the information age but not all of that information has to be modern, it can be traditional too.
Muskingum County Library System Adult Services Librarian Heather Phillips announced an upcoming event that uses old-fashioned curiosity to encourage literacy through comparing historic cooking recipes to modern tastes.
“And we’ll go, we’ll cook a recipe together from this particular cookbook,” Phillips said. “And then we’ll all talk about cookbooks and things we’ve made. The theme this time is historical recipes, so it can be anything from like… your grandmother’s, great-great-grandmother’s like old thing from the file or something from an actual cookbook that you really enjoy. And this time we’re going to make leftover bread pancakes. So we feed you during this too.”
Phillips noted that this is a new experience because it’s only the second time that the Cookbook Club has been met and she would like to see the group expand.
“And we’ll be meeting every-other-month and every-single-time,” Phillips said. “I’m going to try cookbooks with a different theme. So even if you don’t like historical recipes, if you want to just join and meet people in the club and then next time try something new too and I do really prefer registration for food allergy reasons, just so I know in advance.”
The Cookbook Club will meet 1 p.m. this Saturday, in the Storytime & Meeting Room A, at the John McIntire Library and you can pre-register online.
