April Showers Bring Dangers of Flooding

ZANESVILLE, OH – The April showers are making their way into our area.

And while they will bring May flowers, the rain also brings some dangers.

Over the next week, our area is looking at possibly strong thunderstorms and rain showers.

Russell Taylor, the Chief of the South Zanesville Fire Department, said the main thing to keep in mind if you are traveling and get caught in a storm is to turn around if you see water ponding on the roadway.

“Don’t drive through it because we do not know how deep it is and you won’t know how deep it is,” Taylor said. “And if you get stuck, we’re going to have to come rescue you from anywhere in the county. All departments are wishing you do not go through high water.”

Taylor said you can call your local fire department to report high water so they can send a crew to place road closure or high water signs.

He also said if your house begins to flood to reach higher ground like on the second story of your home.

“Or even if you could get on the roof, if the water gets that high,” Taylor said. “Right now, as I said, the river’s really, really, high right now and with all this rain they’re calling for, it’s going to really go up even higher.”

Taylor said if you have any questions or want more information about flooding, you can reach out to the EMA’s Office or any local fire department.
