OSHP Steps Up for Safer Roads This Memorial Day Weekend

ZANESVILLE, OH – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is ramping up its presence on the state’s roadways to promote safety during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

Troopers will be highly visible, focusing on ensuring that motorists obey traffic laws, particularly with regard to the use of safety belts and sober driving.

“What we saw last year, most of the serious injury or fatal crashes in Ohio revolved one of two things: alcohol and drugs, or the lack of wearing seatbelts. Our focus this year will be on those categories, OVI enforcement and traffic safety with safety belts,” Sgt. Jeffrey Jirles from the Zanesville Post said.

Last year in Ohio, 24 fatal crashes killed 26 people during the Memorial Day weekend. Motorists are reminded to buckle up, to refrain from driving under the influence, to observe all traffic regulations, and to be vigilant around motorcycles.

“We expect the heaviest travel times will be on Thursday and Friday, especially in the afternoons. If you have to travel, we encourage you to travel earlier in the day. Leave earlier on Thursday or Friday. If your travel on Monday, earlier in the day would be better. Monday afternoon will be very busy as well,” Sgt. Jirles said.

If you witness drug activity, dangerous, or impaired driving, you are encouraged to report it by calling #677.
